UNIVERSE OF SUPER HEROES
Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), SC Exhibitions and Marvel Entertainment celebrate the world premiere of MARVEL: UNIVERSE OF SUPER HEROES in Seattle in April 2018.
SC Exhibitions has teamed up with The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) and Marvel Entertainment, to produce an exciting new show celebrating Marvel's artistic and cultural legacy.
For people around the world, Marvel conjures up images of one thing: Super Heroes. Whether in the vibrant colours of comic books, or the all-consuming brilliance of the big screen, Marvel characters have captured imaginations for the past 80 years.
Readers and viewers have been catapulted into a vibrant alternate universe of characters and stories that defy belief. The launch of Marvel’s ambitious movie franchise has only heightened this fascination, and as comic books gain a firm foothold as a legitimate part of our visual culture and heritage, there’s a unique opportunity to look back on the publisher’s enduring legacy. It’s also a chance to recognize the so-called “imaginauts” – such as Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko – behind the stories that have made the Marvel saga one of the most expansive fictional universes ever created.
There couldn’t be a better time for a museum exhibition that tells the story of the company, and its cast of Super Heroes, to what is sure to be a legion of visitors – from families with children, to pop culture and comic book enthusiasts, as well as moviegoers, keen collectors and anyone who’s been awed by the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the last 10 years.
The exhibition will feature rare and original artifacts – including some of the publisher’s most iconic pages, and costumes and props – exploring Marvel's heritage in both print and on-screen. They will uncover individual characters, and their narratives, as well as the development of the company as a whole and its influence on contemporary visual culture. SC Exhibitions has partnered with an outstanding curatorial team, including three renowned scholars of comics that led the show’s development. Benjamin Saunders is curator of the show, working in close collaboration with Matthew J. Smith and Randy Duncan, all of them university professors and experts in this field. MoPOP curators Brooks Peck and Jacob McMurray, as well as comic book writers Anne Nocenti and Danny Fingeroth, complete the curatorial lead team. SC Exhibitions is also working with acclaimed composers Lorne Balfe and Hans Zimmer on a soundscape.
Produced in partnership with Marvel Themed Entertainment, the show will carry the MoPOP brand too. The exhibition will make its world premiere in April 2018, at the Museum of Pop Culture, Seattle.
